Iris vs OptiFine for Minecraft Shaders
Iris and OptiFine both load shader packs. They are not interchangeable. If you already use Sodium, install Iris. If you want a single installer and do not care about Sodium, OptiFine still works — but you will lose the frame rate Sodium provides.
The short answer
Use Iris if: you are on Fabric or NeoForge, you want Sodium's performance, or you want faster updates to new Minecraft versions [citation:13].
Use OptiFine if: you want a one-click installer, you need built-in zoom and connected textures without extra mods, or you are on a very old Minecraft version that Iris does not support [citation:2].
Feature comparison
| Feature | Iris | OptiFine |
|---|---|---|
| Works with Sodium | Yes — designed for it | No — replaces Sodium |
| Mod loader | Fabric / NeoForge / Quilt | Standalone (no loader needed) |
| Shader pack support | Most OptiFine packs work | Broadest legacy support |
| Zoom | Via separate mod (Zoomify) | Built in |
| Connected textures | Via Continuity | Built in |
| Custom entity models | Via EMF | Built in |
| Open source | Yes (LGPL-3.0) | No |
| Update speed | Fast — days after MC release | Slower |
| Iris-exclusive features | Colored lighting (LPV) in some packs | Not supported [citation:2] |
Performance
Iris runs on top of Sodium, which replaces Minecraft's renderer with a more efficient one. A mid-range machine running Sodium + Iris will generally see higher frame rates with shaders than the same machine running OptiFine [citation:10].
OptiFine has its own performance optimizations, but they do not stack with Sodium because OptiFine is incompatible with Sodium. You use one or the other, not both .
Shader pack compatibility
Iris supports the overwhelming majority of existing OptiFine shader packs. Complementary, BSL, Sildur's, and Photon all load in Iris without modification. Iris maintains a public list of unsupported packs rather than letting users discover failures themselves [citation:10].
Some shader packs use Iris-exclusive features that OptiFine cannot render. Photon's colored lighting (LPV) is one example — it requires compute shaders and extended buffer access that OptiFine's shader format does not support. If a shader pack lists Iris as required, it will not work correctly in OptiFine [citation:2].
How to install Iris
- Install Fabric or NeoForge for your Minecraft version.
- Download Sodium and Iris from Modrinth. Both are required.
- Place both
.jarfiles in themodsfolder. - Launch the game. Shader packs go in
.minecraft/shaderpacks. Select them from Video Settings > Shader Packs [citation:10].
How to install OptiFine
- Download the OptiFine installer for your Minecraft version from optifine.net.
- Run it and select "Install."
- Launch the OptiFine profile in the Minecraft Launcher.
- Shader packs go in
.minecraft/shaderpacks. Select them from Video Settings > Shaders [citation:2].
What you lose by switching to Iris
Zoom, connected textures, and custom entity models are built into OptiFine. On Iris, you need separate mods: Zoomify for zoom, Continuity for connected textures, and EMF/ETF for entity models and textures. This is not a downgrade — it is a modular approach. But it is more files to install.
