Why saturation matters

Minecraft has two hidden hunger values: hunger (the visible drumsticks) and saturation (an invisible buffer). Saturation depletes first. When it runs out, hunger starts dropping. Most players do not know what their saturation level is because the vanilla HUD does not show it.

AppleSkin makes saturation visible. It also shows how much hunger and saturation a food item will restore before you eat it, so you can carry the right food for the situation.

What it adds to the HUD

  • Saturation overlay — a subtle bar or icon showing current saturation, separate from hunger.
  • Food tooltips — hover over any food item to see its hunger and saturation values.
  • Hunger preview — when holding food, the HUD shows how much hunger will be restored.
  • Exhaustion tracking — optional display of exhaustion level, which drives saturation depletion.

Installation

  1. Install Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge for your Minecraft version.
  2. Download the AppleSkin JAR from CurseForge for your exact loader and Minecraft version [citation:2].
  3. Place the JAR in the mods folder.
  4. Launch the game. AppleSkin is client-side; it works on any server.
Version note: AppleSkin has separate builds for Forge and Fabric. The CurseForge file list shows the loader in the filename (e.g., appleskin-forge-mc1.19-2.4.1.jar). Pick the one that matches your setup [citation:9].

Compatibility

AppleSkin does not conflict with most HUD mods because it adds information rather than replacing the hunger bar. Mods that completely redesign the HUD (like some RPG-style UI overhauls) may overlap. Check the mod page if you use a major HUD replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Does AppleSkin give an advantage in PvP?
It gives information that vanilla does not show, but it does not change combat mechanics. Some competitive servers may consider it a minor advantage, but it is not a cheat mod. It is widely used in single-player and on casual servers.
Will AppleSkin work on Bedrock?
No. AppleSkin is a Java Edition mod only.
Does AppleSkin need to be installed on the server?
No. It is client-side. The server does not need it for the HUD information to display.
Why does saturation still drop even when I am not moving?
Saturation depletes from exhaustion, which is generated by sprinting, jumping, attacking, and mining blocks. Standing still does not generate exhaustion, but natural regeneration and other actions do. AppleSkin shows you the current value; it does not change the mechanics.
