What Entity Culling does

Minecraft renders many entities and block entities that the player cannot actually see — behind walls, underground, or outside the field of view. Entity Culling uses async path-tracing to detect which entities are visible and skips rendering the ones that are not [citation:4].

Unlike some optimization mods, Entity Culling does not reduce render distance or remove visual detail. It only skips rendering work that would have been invisible anyway.

What it culls

  • Entities — mobs, items, and projectiles that are occluded by blocks.
  • Block entities — chests, signs, and machines that are not visible.

The mod includes a config screen to whitelist specific entities if needed .

Installation

  1. Install Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge for your Minecraft version.
  2. Download the Entity Culling JAR from CurseForge for your loader and version.
  3. Place it in the mods folder.
  4. Launch the game. No configuration required for most users.
Client-side only: Entity Culling is a client-side mod. The server does not need it. It works on any server that allows client-side mods.

Frequently asked questions

Does Entity Culling work with Sodium?
Yes. They target different parts of the rendering pipeline. Sodium optimizes terrain rendering; Entity Culling optimizes entity and block entity rendering. Install both.
Will Entity Culling hide entities I should be able to see?
The mod uses path-tracing to determine visibility, which is generally accurate. If you notice an entity that should be visible is being culled, you can whitelist it in the config screen .
Does Entity Culling improve FPS on servers with many players?
Yes. In crowded areas with many entities, the mod can provide a noticeable improvement by skipping rendering for entities behind walls or outside the field of view.
