SEUS PTGI
Path-traced global illumination for Minecraft. The most demanding shader pack on this list by a wide margin. Requires a modern dedicated GPU for playable frame rates. Distributed by Sonic Ether. A modified edition (GFME) exists but requires the original file to build .

What SEUS PTGI does
SEUS PTGI (Path Traced Global Illumination) uses path tracing to simulate how light bounces around the world. Unlike rasterized shaders that approximate lighting, PTGI traces individual light rays. The result is accurate reflections, soft shadows, and colored light bounce that other shaders cannot replicate.
The tradeoff is performance. PTGI is significantly more demanding than BSL, Complementary, or Photon. On hardware without a modern dedicated GPU, frame rates will be unplayable [citation:13].
What makes it different
- Path-traced global illumination — light bounces accurately, colors bleed onto nearby surfaces.
- Off-screen reflections — water reflects objects that are not currently visible on screen.
- Metal sunlight caustics — in the GFME modified edition .
- PBR support — works with PBR resource packs for parallax and specular mapping [citation:13].
Hardware requirements
SEUS PTGI requires a dedicated GPU. Integrated graphics will not run it at playable frame rates. The GFME modified edition notes compatibility with Iris 1.7.0+ and OptiFine above Minecraft 1.8.9 (released after April 2019) .
For 1080p gameplay, expect to need a GPU with at least 6 GB of VRAM for light packs, and 8+ GB for PTGI at playable settings [citation:13].
Installation (GFME modified edition)
The GFME edition is a modified version that works with Iris. Because PTGI's EULA prohibits direct redistribution, you must build it yourself :
- Download the GFME jar from its GitHub releases page.
- Download a vanilla unedited PTGI file from Sonic Ether's Patreon.
- Place both files in the same folder and run the jar.
- Move the resulting folder or zip into
.minecraft/shaderpacks.
