How to Choose a Minecraft Version
The version you play decides which mods work, which shaders load, and which maps open. It is not about "latest is best." A modpack built for 1.20.1 will not run on 1.21 without updates. This guide explains how to pick the right version for what you want to do.
Step 1: Java or Bedrock
This is the first decision, and it is not reversible for a single world. Java and Bedrock are separate editions [citation:4].
- Java Edition — Windows, macOS, Linux. Full mod support, shaders, free maps and resource packs from the community. If you want mods or shaders, this is the edition [citation:4].
- Bedrock Edition — Windows, consoles, mobile. Crossplay with friends on other platforms, Marketplace with curated content, add-ons instead of mods. If you play with friends on consoles or phones, this is the edition [citation:4].
On Windows, both editions are included in the same purchase. You can install both and switch in the launcher [citation:4].
Step 2: What are you trying to install?
Your version is usually decided by the resource, not by you.
- Mods — check the mod page. It lists a specific Minecraft version (e.g., 1.20.1). That is the version you need. A mod built for 1.20.1 will not load on 1.20.2 [citation:4].
- Shaders — most shader packs support a range of versions. Check the pack page. Iris and OptiFine versions also need to match [citation:1].
- Maps — the map page lists its version. A 1.19 map may load in 1.20 but break command blocks. Use the version the map was built for [citation:2].
- Texture packs — often work across minor versions. A 1.20 pack usually loads on 1.21, but not always [citation:3].
Step 3: When to use an older version
Older versions are not "worse." They are often better for specific modpacks.
- Modpacks — large modpacks take time to update. A modpack built for 1.20.1 may never port to 1.21. If you want to play that pack, you play 1.20.1.
- Performance mods — Sodium, Iris, and Lithium update quickly, but some add-on mods lag behind. If a performance mod you need is not on 1.21 yet, stay on 1.20.
- Maps and worlds — a world you have been building for years may break on a new version. Back it up before updating.
How to change versions in the launcher
Java Edition: open the Minecraft Launcher, click Installations, click New installation, and select the version from the dropdown. You can have multiple versions installed at once [citation:4].
Bedrock Edition: the version updates automatically. You cannot choose an older version without third-party tools.
What about snapshots?
Snapshots are pre-release test versions of Minecraft. They are not stable. Do not use them for a world you care about. Mods, shaders, and maps usually do not support snapshots until the full release is out [citation:4].
