What Cloth Config API does

Cloth Config is a library that mod developers use to build configuration screens. Without it, a mod that offers in-game settings cannot display those settings. The mod may still function with default values, but you cannot change anything without editing config files manually.

For players, the practical effect is simple: if a mod page says "requires Cloth Config API," install it. You will get the mod's settings menu. If you skip it, the game may crash, or the settings button may do nothing.

What it provides

  • Config screen framework — a consistent UI for sliders, toggles, dropdowns, and text fields.
  • Multi-loader support — the same config screen works on Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge.
  • Integration with Mod Menu — on Fabric, Cloth Config screens open from the Mod Menu mod list.

Installation

  1. Install the loader required by the mod that depends on Cloth Config.
  2. Download the Cloth Config JAR from CurseForge for your loader and Minecraft version [citation:28].
  3. Place it in the mods folder alongside the dependent mod.
  4. Launch the game. The config screen for the dependent mod will now be accessible through its settings menu or Mod Menu.
Do you need Cloth Config on a server? Usually no. Cloth Config is primarily a client-side library for config screens. However, if a server-side mod depends on it for config loading, it may need to be on the server as well. Check the dependent mod's page.

Frequently asked questions

I installed Cloth Config but the mod still has no settings menu.
Check the loader. Cloth Config has separate builds for Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge. Using a Forge build on Fabric will not work. Also check the Minecraft version — a 1.20.1 build will not load on 1.21.
Can I have multiple config libraries installed?
Yes. Cloth Config does not conflict with other config libraries like YACL or Forge Config API. Different mods use different libraries, and they coexist.
Does Cloth Config change game behavior?
No. It only provides UI for settings. It does not modify gameplay.
