What GeckoLib is (and is not)

GeckoLib is not a content mod. It does not add mobs, bosses, or items. It is a library that other mods use to animate 3D models. Without GeckoLib, any mod that depends on it will crash on startup or fail to display its custom entities correctly.

If you downloaded a mod that adds a custom boss or creature and the game says "GeckoLib is missing," this is the fix. Install it, and the dependent mod will load.

What it enables in other mods

  • Animated entities — smooth, keyframe-based animations for custom mobs and bosses.
  • Animated blocks — moving parts, rotating components, and interactive block models.
  • Animated items — items with idle animations or held animations.
  • Animated armor — armor sets with custom bone-based animations.

Installation

  1. Install the loader that the dependent mod requires (Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge).
  2. Download the GeckoLib JAR from CurseForge for your exact loader and Minecraft version [citation:22].
  3. Place GeckoLib and the dependent mod in the mods folder together.
  4. Launch the game. GeckoLib does not appear as a separate item or menu — it works silently in the background.
Version matching: GeckoLib versions are tied to Minecraft versions. A GeckoLib build for 1.20.1 will not work on 1.21.1. Check the file list on CurseForge and pick the build that matches both your loader and your Minecraft version [citation:30].

Do you need GeckoLib on a server?

If the dependent mod is server-side (adds mobs, bosses, or blocks that need to exist on the server), then GeckoLib must be installed on both the client and the server. If the dependent mod is client-side only, GeckoLib may only be needed on the client. Check the dependent mod's page for its side requirements.

Frequently asked questions

I installed GeckoLib but the mod still says it is missing.
The most common cause is a version mismatch. Check that the GeckoLib version matches the dependent mod's required version and your Minecraft version. Also check that GeckoLib is in the mods folder, not a subfolder.
Can I use GeckoLib with other animation libraries?
GeckoLib is generally compatible with other libraries because it is dependency-based. If a mod requires a different animation library, install both. They serve different mods and do not usually conflict.
Does GeckoLib work on Bedrock?
No. GeckoLib is a Java Edition mod library.
How do I know if a mod needs GeckoLib?
The mod page will list it under "Dependencies" or "Relations." If you skip it, the game will crash on launch with a message naming GeckoLib as the missing dependency.
